There are moments in a nation’s political history that leave no room for relativism, rhetorical justifications, or indulgent interpretations. The State of the Union address delivered by President Donald J. The state is not an ideological abstraction.
It exists to protect the political community that grants it legitimacy. That duty is neither secondary nor optional, nor is it subject to negotiation based on partisan agendas or temporary political sensitivities. When elected representatives refuse to publicly affirm that citizens should be protected first, they send a devastating message: that loyalty to the law and to citizenship may no longer be the supreme value guiding governance.
Illegal immigration is, by legal definition, a concrete violation of sovereign order. Turning that reality into a purely emotional issue weakens the rule of law and creates a dangerous precedent of institutional permissiveness. True compassion does not ignore the law. On the contrary, it demands that the law be applied with fairness and consistency, clearly distinguishing between those who follow the rules and those who circumvent them.
As someone who has lived in this country for more than three decades, the result of a life built upon scrupulous respect for legal norms, I cannot help but view that moment as deeply troubling. Remaining seated in the face of the assertion that the government must protect its citizens before illegal immigrants symbolically diminishes the sacrifice of millions of people who trusted the system, respected the rules, and contributed honestly to the greatness of this nation.
That collective gesture was not merely a political act. It was an unsettling sign of moral and institutional disorientation. It represented a direct affront to American citizens and a silent offense to legal immigrants who chose the harder pat, the path of law, patience, and merit, rightfully expecting the state to distinguish clearly and firmly between legality and illegality.
History shows that nations begin to weaken when they stop affirming, without hesitation, whom they must protect first. There is no sovereignty without respected borders, no justice without distinguishing between compliance with the law and its violation, and no public trust when citizens feel that their dignity can be relativized in the name of abstract ideological agendas.
What took place in that chamber on February 24, 2026, was not merely a routine parliamentary episode. It was a moment of historical revelation. A gesture that will be remembered in the nation’s memory as the day when, faced with a fundamental question of loyalty to the American people, the overwhelming majority of members of the opposing party chose to remain seated. And that choice, given its symbolic weight, constitutes an affront not only to the legal order but to the very civic dignity of the nation and of all those, citizens and legal immigrants alik, who believe in it and serve it with loyalty.
