There are beings whose presence cannot be measured merely by the usefulness they provide, nor exhausted by listing the functions they perform. There are beings whose importance asserts itself in a deeper, quieter, and more enduring way, precisely because what they are matters more than what they do. Lanzer vom Fichtenschlag, born on April 4, 2019, is, to me, the living expression of that truth.

César DePaço

Born in Germany, a land where discipline, solidity, and rigor have always held a place of prominence in the shaping of character, Lanzer began, at three months of age, his demanding training journey according to the principles of Schutzhund. It is important to clarify that Schutzhund—an expression that may be understood as “protection dog”—is not simply attack training, as is sometimes hastily and superficially assumed. Rather, it is a rigorous method of training and evaluation, traditionally tied to the working qualities of certain breeds, structured around three major areas: tracking, obedience, and protection. What it seeks to assess is not merely the animal’s physical strength, but also its intelligence, nerve stability, self-control, courage, discernment, and readiness to act under command, always with a high degree of discipline. In serious terms, it is a true school of character applied to the dog, where impulse alone is not enough, nor is mere instinct sufficient—what is required instead is balance, firmness, and obedience under pressure.

This training process continued until the age of three, and was completed with the level of rigor appropriate for an animal destined not for domestic triviality, but for excellence. Once this preparation was complete, Lanzer came to me in New Jersey, and since then has come to occupy a place in my life that cannot be described in merely functional terms. He is not, to me, simply an admirable dog, nor merely an exceptional companion. He is a constant presence, a silent reference, and a living lesson in qualities that modern man so often proclaims, yet increasingly fails to embody.

On May 16, 2022, Lanzer was integrated as a K-9 with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office in the State of New Jersey—an event that marked, in a solemn and deserved manner, the institutional recognition of qualities that were already evident in him. On August 31, 2023, he was distinguished as an Honorary K-9 of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in the State of Florida, an honor that preceded his formal swearing-in, on October 5, 2023, as an Honorary Deputy K-9 of that same agency. Then, on January 5, 2024, Lanzer took an oath and was recognized as a K-9 of the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, in the State of New Jersey, thus significantly expanding the scope of official recognition of his presence and value. Shortly thereafter, on February 28, 2024, the Brielle Police Department, also in the State of New Jersey, awarded him a Certificate of Honor—distinction that reflects not only institutional appreciation for his bearing and figure, but also recognition of the bond of respect, trust, and regard that his presence inspires among law enforcement. Finally, on June 25, 2024, Lanzer was promoted to K-9 Sergeant in the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, in the State of New Jersey—a distinction that represents not merely formal advancement, but the public confirmation of the discipline, seriousness, and nobility with which he has always carried out his mission.

Yet it would diminish his true dimension to reduce him to the sum of the titles and distinctions he has received. Honors honor him. Appointments recognize him. Oaths publicly consecrate what already exists in him by nature. But none of these forms, however solemn, exhaust the substance of what Lanzer is.

I do not define him, therefore, by the titles he has rightfully earned, though he deserves them. Nor do I define him by the imposing nature of his posture or the evident nobility of his bearing. I define him, above all, by his nature. And it is in that nature that his true greatness resides.

Lanzer does not pretend. He does not perform. He does not bend to the conveniences of the moment, nor does he change according to others’ expectations. At all times, he is faithful to what he is. In an age when so many live by appearances, calculation, and opportunistic adaptation, there is something deeply reassuring in contemplating a being whose identity remains intact. His constancy is not effort, it is essence.

His loyalty is not proclaimed, it is lived. It does not need to be declared, because it manifests itself spontaneously, wholly, and permanently. It does not depend on applause or reward. It knows neither self-interest nor strategy. It is a silent yet absolute loyalty, revealed in calm vigilance, attentive gaze, steady proximity, and the natural readiness to be present without hesitation.

There is, moreover, in Lanzer an intrinsic dignity that cannot be bought, cannot be simulated, and is rarely taught. Training refines abilities. Discipline directs behavior. But true dignity belongs to the realm of essence. And Lanzer possesses it unmistakably. It is evident in the way he occupies space, in how he observes without restlessness, in the composure with which he remains steady, and even in the silence with which he commands respect without the need for agitation.

Living alongside him is, for me, a continuous exercise in reflection. Because, without words, without speeches, and without any intention of teaching, he reminds me daily of principles that many men have abandoned in exchange for ease, vanity, or convenience. He reminds me of the value of constancy in a world dominated by volatility. He reminds me of the value of discretion in an age fascinated by noise. He reminds me, above all, of the value of true loyalty, that higher form of fidelity that does not depend on circumstances.

Lanzer does not seek to please the world. He does not live to impress. He does not need to present an artificial version of himself. He simply is what he is, with a rare and almost austere coherence. And perhaps it is precisely that coherence that most distinguishes him. In a single glance of his, there is sometimes more truth than in many long, elaborate, and socially celebrated speeches.

There is no duplicity in him. There is no distance between what he appears to be and what he is. There is no contradiction between presence and essence. And that integrity—so simple and so absolute, becomes, for those who know how to observe, almost a moral lesson.

We live surrounded by masks, artifices, and theatricality. Lanzer, by contrast, reminds us that authentic greatness lies in fidelity to one’s own nature.

For that very reason, I have never seen him merely as a pet, nor only as a working dog. I see him as a companion of character. I see him as a silent reference of firmness. I even see him as an uncomfortable mirror for a time in which many human beings have lost precisely what in a dog like him arises naturally: the honor of constancy, the purity of loyalty, and the serenity of contained strength.

At its core, Lanzer reminds me that true greatness does not lie in what is displayed outwardly, but in what remains unchanged within.

And that is a lesson that applies equally to men and animals, though, in many cases, it is the animals who uphold it with greater elevation.
